Interesting. Too bad there isn't more money being detected toward restoration of existing lookouts.

Most lookouts serve no purpose. This one gets you a much nicer view. There are a handful of existing ones that are similar, but they are rare. Most just get in the way of the hiking experience, and often, the wilderness experience. Some are historical (AKA old); few are actually historic. Even in terms of age, they aren't that old. It isn't like ancient ruins or something -- I have friends that are older than a lot of lookouts. Anyway, this is a nice addition.

Sure, though it looks like this was one non-profit group that worked to make this happen (they did a nice job with fundraising, it looks like), so if that's what they want to do... The Mt Peak Historical Fire Lookout Association is a community-based organization that formed in 2016 with the goal of enhancing the visitor experience at Pinnacle Peak Park and paying homage to the area’s history through the construction and maintenance of the tower. The tower is roughly the same scale as the one that stood in 1966, with a 20-foot by 20-foot view deck approximately 30 feet off the ground. From the deck, visitors will have stunning views of Mount Rainier and the Port of Tacoma, along with sweeping views of the valley and foothills. Funding for this project includes $295,000 from King County Parks’ CPG Program to the Mt. Peak Historical Fire Lookout Association, which matched that with $1,305,000 in grants and in-kind services and donations. For more information, follow Mt Peak Historical Fire Lookout Association on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/mtpeakfirelookouttower.

Actually there are groups that are working to restore and preserve historic and REAL Fire Lookouts in the area. Snoqualmie Fire Lookouts Association (SFLA) was fired up this year to help preserve Suntop, Kelly Butte, and Granite Mountain lookouts as active, in-service fire lookouts. While the cabs of Kelly and Granite were replaced back in the 1950's, the current cab at Suntop is the original from 1932-- nearly 90 years old. BTW, these lookouts are still used to spot fires (re-roofing crew spotted one and reported it a couple of weeks back). Rather than being "in the way" or just serving as a glass cabin for some MicroXXX millionaire to rent, these buildings are proving their worth and value in helping to spot fires early! We just put a new roof on Suntop, and are rebuilding trails, repairing decks, and restoring lightning protection on these cool buildings. SFLA doesn't have the deep pockets of the folks building a replica lookout at Mt. Peak, but instead has a cadre of dedicated volunteers who want these building to be real fire lookouts-- spotting fires and telling the public the great history of the Forest Service and Fire Lookouts. www.snoqualmielookouts.org
