I have to confirm this but it sounds like she was down in the timber along the NW ridge (winter route) & had taken shelter under a fallen tree at about 4500 ft. She was found in her sleeping bag.

I wonder how the people who found Rachel got up there? I had seen statements from forest service that the hidden Lake peak road (to the trailhead) is closed except to fire crews working on the pincer creek fire?

So she was found where that little red cross is in the white circle? Thanks for posting that map. It's very readable.
She was quite a ways off the trail and downhill if that marks the spot. Heading off trail and down that drainage wouldn't be easy. I believe it's forested there. ~z

I have heard some people refer to the NW ridge as an early spring route to avoid avalanches. Big trees, not a lot of brush.

I could see someone lost heading that direction to get lower, and thinking they would hit the road eventually.

Yes, the ridge that goes up from the large switchback on the Sibley Creek Road is easy travelling in the Winter and Spring. I've gone both up and down it in midwinter and in the dark. She was found in the drainage just to the south of the ridge.

Really sad, given that she didn't die in a fall, but likely from hypothermia. I wonder if there was a rain and snow mix and maybe her bag and clothes were wet? Not sure what the night time temps were or if she had a warm bag. So much more dangerous going out alone, especially late in the fall when conditions can be much more extreme.

Yes, snowstorm. I was in the Mt. Baker/Twin Lakes area that same day and conditions were quite poor for navigation. Her eventual location would have been below the snow level for that day. People who are disoriented tend to descend too soon. She was likely cold, wet, and exhausted.

Can you explain to me (us?) what this means, exactly? I'm not all that "mountain savvy", living on the plains of the midwest as I do, but I do get out there occasionally, and I just love the mountains. This might be useful information.

Not my post but put yourself in that position.
If you are cold, tired, not 100% sure where you are but know you have to descend to get back to the car any time you see a route that might get you back that is downhill you are likely to take it.
