Has to be day trip up Mt. Stuart via Longs Pass and Cascadian Couloir, w/ a side trip to Ingalls Lake and out via Ingalls Pass thrown in for good measure. I think I figured that was somewhere around 9500'. That was out of the ordinary, usually around 5000' is a good amount of vertical gain for me. As alluded to before, not all vertical gain is equal. Gothic Basin is a tougher hike than plenty of others that gain 1000 or 1500 more feet. I don't have a device that tracks all the little ups and downs, some hikes add up to more gain than you would think. Something like Lost Creek Ridge.

About 6,500 up and 9,000 down. After a while the down was harder than the up.

About 20,000' during the first 24 hours of the Hardrock 100 in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado with another 10,000' to go. That was in 1993, only the second year of this now famous trail adventure. We didn't know if it would kill us or not, with average elevation of 11,300' and eight trips to 13000,' or more. Didn't kill me then, would now! ( it now has 33,000' of climb and the same descent. The course record is a little over 22 hours.) Trivia: the tiny photo by my name is me on the HR 100 course.

Alaskan's are different -- they do a fund raiser called the "Climbathon" where folks climb up 2025' laps on the Mt Alyeska ski area and take the ski lift down. https://akclimbathon.dojiggy.com/b02d02f/regPages/pages/?p=b71112c2 In 2019 (the last time it was held before COVID) a new record was set of 13 laps (26,325') in a single day. My sister particpated as well logging 6 laps (12,150') https://reg.dojiggy.com/images/uploads/11610/pdf/2019ClimbathonResultsFinal.pdf In 2020 they did a "virtual" climbathon , where over a two week period Christopher Cornelius did 50 laps (101,250') My sister is doing the virtual climbathon for 2021 in support of Let Every Woman Know https://akclimbathon.dojiggy.com/b02d02f/reg-pages/pledge/leteverywomanknowalaska My sister's donation page is here: https://akclimbathon.dojiggy.com/b02d02f/reg-pages/pledge/lisaoakley

I guess it was last year going up Mt Pugh...as was mentioned, when it's on a smooth nice trail such as that one, the gain doesn't seem as bad, plus it's a gradual ascent. The exposure at the top freaked me out, next time no heavy, cumbersome boots on that hike, being lighter on my feet would have made me more comfortable.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I recently made my first visit there to scramble Gothic peak (forgot my helmet and some scary rockfall made me turn back just ~200ft below the top…) and two things surprised me: how much effort it took relative to the gain, and how many people I saw coming back down.

Dom Peak Switzerland. Base to summit about 10,000.....many other people in my age range doing it too. With a stop for beers at the hut on the way down. It wasn't that bad....when you are 30.....

Art is an adventure.

There is a growing subculture within the ultra heavy scene dedicated to heavy gain. Known as UHHG (Ultra Heavy Heavy Gain).

Via Colchuck ~ 3400 to 7800 high point Snow Lakes TH is 1400-ish so add another 2K if you go all the way to Aasgard Pass this way (not sure why anyone would).

South Sister in Oregon. Almost 5k feet, but spread out over 6 miles. I feel like I've done more challenging climbs.

The North Bend Triple, about 11,500. After that I've done multiple single-push climbs on Rainier: Two on the DC (9000) and two or three on the Emmons (10,000). I did a 29.9 mile traverse of Saguaro East National Park a few years ago. I think that was about 9000. That same spring my Sunday training day was 2xMailbox or Mailbox+Si, and the Poo Poo, just under 10,000 either way. I did a single-push on the Easton on Baker one time, about 7000. I skied down 3000 feet, ran into some friends, and went back to the summit with them before skiing to the car. 2013 I did a total of 426,000 vert over 717 miles. That's the only year I've ever kept track of everything. One thing I've learned about the PNW- no matter how fast and fit I am, the odds are that on any given day on any trail, there is someone faster coming up behind me. I scooted up Mailbox in 78 minutes one time only to turn around and see a dude jogging up right behind me. "How'd you do?" "58 minutes", he says, "Not bad for a second lap." I rarely keep track of time anymore. It's helpful to be able to go fast, but it's more helpful to have endurance. And I have a pretty good idea of how fast I'm going without looking at a watch.

If not now, when?

A nice climb if you just want to go straight up a trail without a lot of up & down is mount san jacinto out of palm springs (cactus to clouds trail), over 10K gain.
