Can somebody explain the reason to hoist up the base jumper but then bring in the helicopter close to pick up the rescuer? I have no idea why and am puzzled.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

I noticed that the rescuer belayed the base jumper on his hoist, presumably to minimize draft effects. I wondered how the rescuer would get hoisted without similar assistance, so perhaps that's why they came in closer? I didn't actually notice them coming in closer though, perhaps it looks that way from his camera as they hoisted him.

I couldn't access the FB link above either, but could see info on SCVSAR's FB page: “Yesterday, Chief Pilot Quistorf and the Snohomish County Helicopter Rescue Team (HRT) responded to Mt. Baring for a base jumper who was stuck on a small shelf. He was uninjured but did not have a way to self-rescue going up or down. SnoHawk10 responded and was able to successfully rescue the subject. Great work by HRT!" I'd venture a guess that the jumper got into a tight spot b/c he got off-route on the ascent. Maybe a good thing he didn't make it to a jump. rolleyes.gif I was wondering the same thing as Treeswarper; also why the SAR guy was uncoiling what looked like a roll of lightweight climbing cord.

That makes sense. I imagine it is possible to get sick if twirling around too much. I am stuck at home quarantining for a few days. Please keep posting interesting stuff.

Jump in here to address some of the questions. Car68 flys with King Co. This was a Snohomish County mission and team. The pack was brought up with our Rescue Tech. We hoisted her from the same location/elevation as the subject. He got there, we believe, on account of an equipment malfunction after jumping from the usual launch point and making a "emergency landing" on an outcropping. He attempted to down climb from his initial landing spot to no avail. The spool of cord is a tag line used to control/prevent the subject from spinning on the way up to the aircraft.

That rescuer on the winch is a she and is a member of NWHikers No, she didn't leave the pack behind The helo didn't descend to pick her up - that was just an effect of the GoPro's wide angle lens

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm just curious how they minimize issues for the rescuer when they hoist? Or are they just better prepared in how to mitigate?

The rescuers are trained as to techniques to deal with spinning.

That crew did another base jumper rescue on Guye Peak Saturday.

I'm the guy 911 calls.
