Dave, Gus and I went out to the Sawtooths yesterday for Beefhide and Seance. After the long drive, we arrived at the surprisingly empty trailhead just before 8am. Gus was stoked! We hiked the East Fork Buttermilk Trail for 5 miles until 6500 ft before cutting off to the right and eventually finding a nice larchy class 3 rib that got us on top of Sawtooth Ridge just SE of the summit of Beefhide. We summited around 11:20.

The NE ridge of Beefhide is technical, so we dropped directly East off of the summit 200ft down a chossy class 3 gully. We were then able to work our way back up to the ridge and run it all the way to the summit of Seance. Gus really excelled on the exposed class 3!

Temps were nice and comfortable for lunch on Seance, and the views were good!

I had aspirations of tagging Spirit Mountain with Dave, but Gus bonked hard on the descent of Seance. That, coupled with a bloody paw, had us bailing down towards the trail from the Seance-Spirit saddle, while Dave went for the bonus peak alone, in true Golias from. Gus had a tough slog back out the last 3 miles of trail, he hasn’t yet learned how to pace himself when the stoke is uncontrollably high leaving the car. We all met back up at the car at 5:30 and enjoyed beers and pasta in Twisp before the long drive home.

A little history on how Beefhide Peak got named. It is named after my hiking partner of 40+ years, Norm Beefhide Burke who passed away earlier this year. He was raised in Beefhide, Kentucky, lived in Bellevue until the early 90's and retired to Manson where he climber until his late 80's. He was one tough dude.

Beefhide - now I get it! Seance? I've only seen it named 8067' on old and new maps. Where did the name come from?
Never found the register in July. Just some old nylon trash. Great Report! That's a bold dog!

It's nice to see you and Gus bonding over some mountains. He will be allowed back in bed in no time!
