This morning I ran into an acquaintance/neighbor on his way to work - he is a Smokejumper out of NCSB at Winthrop. I asked “so, things slowing down for you?” “Nope” he said - “still pretty busy. Now it’s campfires….we have been jumping 1 or 2 escaped campfires in the backcountry nearly every day.” He said Wednesday’s fire was in the Enchantments. Be careful with your camp fires! Better yet, don't build one.

Are the outdoor fire bans imposed by WDFW, DNR, NPS, and USFS no longer still in effect?

Some of them are no longer in effect. Campfires are legal in a lot of the Colville NF. "Campfires are permitted when contained within provided metal rings at the designated developed recreation sites listed in Exhibit A, below." https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd950179.pdf

Just checked, the entire OKA-WEN NF is closed for fires, including Wilderness. Dont know about the others. Not that a closure stops people from being stupid……

The Walker fire is burning merrily. It got perkier yesterday as it reached the jack strawed lodgepole habitat of Bonaparte Mtn. It is well fed now. Smoke has been moving in and out of the valley but has not been horrible.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

Aren't campfires in the Enchantments permit area banned year round -- regardless of fire conditions.

Right now, yes, on the east side. The general prohibitions are: Fires not allowed above 4000’ feet on the west side and above 5000’ on the east side, and within 1/2 mile at a list of lakes and listed locations. Here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5407053.pdf

Yeah -- the 5000 foot elevation limit and 1/2 mile from lakes rules means there isn't anywhere in the Enchantments where a campfire is ever permitted. Nada lake is just below 5000 feet -- but there isn't anywhere to camp that is more than a 1/2 mile from the lakeshore. So the folks that are kindling fires are scofflaws year round -- not just during fire season. Unless they are camping somewhere along the Snow Creek trail or Mountaineer Creek trail -- which seems a goofy thing to do -- as camping anywhere along those trails requires an Enchantments lottery permit.
