It's at least 3 weeks too early.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet they start showing next week after this weekend's cold snap.

Are you sure they respond to weather? Or is it amount of daylight? My memory is that they tend to turn around the same time when we have warm fall weather as when we get early winter storms. And I can't recall the larches ever turning gold (except for a little one here or there) in mid-September. But maybe I'm wrong.

Both temperature and light. I wouldn't think weather would play as much a factor unless significantly colder than normal.

Short answer for most would be "no". To other conifer enthusiasts, I would say there is a lovely tapestry of color right now. Larches are mostly a healthy green, though lightening, and a small branch or tree here and there is in full gold. Other conifers have begun to take on their (mostly darker) winter color, enhancing the contrast. Photoperiodism is the primary cue, and temperature is a lesser secondary cue. Rainfall and a few other factors can accelerate or delay onset a little but mostly contribute to the intensity of color. I'm pretty sure all of those secondary cues will never produce peak color in mid-September. You can see a precocious golden one near the middle of this photo from last week. Only saw 2 or 3 like that in 5 leisurely days travel.

I was wondering about this also after seeing several larches changing color in the Chiwawa’s earlier in the week.

Nice place to be, Nancyann. Making me a little envious after we axed it from our itinerary last week. Fall color all over seems to be arriving on the early side this year.

I've found that the Alpine Larches are at there best during the 1st and 2nd week of October. It is very consistent. Western larches are 2-3 weeks later.

I was in the Enchantments at roughly this time last year, if I am not mistaken I entered on 9/19/20 and stayed three nights, and I was surprised at how many larches were already turning. To be clear there were many that were still green, but I would estimate maybe 30% were gold by that point? It was a lot more than I was expecting.

We just were up on the Heather and Maple Pass trail yesterday, and they are still green, at least in the Heather Pass area. It was cloudy and rainy, and we couldn't really see well up to Maple Pass or the upper reaches above Lake Ann, but it looked like maybe they are starting to show a lighter shade of green. Anyway, give it another couple weeks. We knew it was early, but just needed to get out somewhere high and beautiful.

The larch show was cancelled this year for lack of funding. People need to donate generously to the trees.

Larches looked to be around 30% turned in the Core on Thursday when I was up on a Prusik attempt. They were only turning that lighter green over by Robinson Mt. on Monday

we drove over the NCH yesterday. The high up larches (Lyall Larches?) are yellow on the heights. there are a few trees turning on the lower slopes but the fine color is still a week or two out. Pretty though!! cool.gif

We rode over yesterday... an amazing ride with some color and I agree the best is still a couple weeks out. (side note: In all the times of my going over the pass I have never seen sooooooo many cars parked on both sides of the highway. Was something special going on?)
