I used to like hiking up the Dosewallips in the spring, but a few years ago I hiked it in the fall and discovered there was a magical feeling to the hike with deciduous trees and plants loosing their leaves. Now, I rather enjoy hiking the Dosewallips in the early fall rather in the spring time. With good walking weather yesterday and it being my day off from work, I headed off to the Dosewallips.
I walked as far as the Elkhorn campground, taking numerous pictures along the way and taking nearly 3 hours to get there. There was much delay with picture taking. At Elkhorn I found a picnic table in the warm sun to eat lunch and listen to the river flow past. There was, what looked to me, to be an abandoned tent with quite a bit of stuff piled around it at Elkhorn. It appeared to have been there for a couple of weeks.
The big leaf maples were just beginning to turn color, along with some vine maples. There were a few ground plants that had or were beginning to turn color. The interesting bluish/green color of the water in the Dosewallip’s wasn’t at its usual intensity; it was definitely muted today.
Now for the picture show:

Thanks for posting the Dose pictures. My friend used to patrol that road and take care of the Elkhorn camp ground many years ago. He was the guard at Corrigenda for 5 summers. I just brought his attention to the post and he enjoyed the wonderful pictures. I drove the road many time myself, when it was possible to go all the way into the park.

I miss being able drive to the end of the the road. The last time I went all the way to the end of the road by vehicle was in 2001 when my mom dropped me off for a solo hike from the Dosewallips to Elwha trailhead. I still think about that particular hike from time to time.
