The Staircase Rapids Loop is another trail that I discovered a few years ago that offers some decent lowland fall color. The fall colors were similar to my hike up the Dosewallips last week. The were a few Big Leaf Maples that were turning color and a few that hadn’t. Vine Maples were turning color too, along with Devils Club and numerous ground plants.
It was a great day for a walk, sunny and not too cool. I thought I would have to bundle up to stay warm, but my fleece jacket and wool hat sufficed. And it helped that I found a spot in the sun, next to the river, to eat my lunch. I walked approximately 4 miles over a period of 5 or so hours. Picture taking provided much delay in my walking speed.
