In a new twist, this year, WSDOT announces a FIRM closing date for the Highway. 0730 on Nov 15. https://wsdot.wa.gov/travel/highways-bridges/passes/north-cascades-highway/home From the e-mail: “New in 2021: A planned closure date. In the past, the seasonal closure date has been assessed on a case-by-case basis. While there is a chance the highway may close earlier than Nov. 15, WSDOT is setting a closure date this year to allow travelers to plan ahead with more certainty.”

I was over in Winthrop a couple weeks ago. Not much is open. My guess is that Methow Valley businesses aren't lobbying the WSDOT to keep the pass open past Thanksgiving with the same vigor as they have during "normal" times.

Back when I could still drive I used to do SR20 loops every year. One year I was eating lunch at the Mazama café and I asked if they knew when the road would be closed. They said ya, twenty minutes! I ran out of there and a crew was waiting at the gate as I flew past. They closed it behind me. I was the only car on SR20 between the gates! They closed the western gate as I drove past. It was a blast being the only car on the road.

Since the statute of limitations is likely up, care to share the top speed you hit on that trip? smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

Lol. I pegged the speedometer at 145mph into the dip before the road climbs up to rainy Pass. hockeygrin.gif

A colleague of mine used to share custody of a son with his ex who was living in Twisp. He said his best time from Twisp to Redmond was 2 1/2 hours. He has a Audi R8 with a lot of aftermarket performance enhancements and also has Jeannie Mucklestone on retainer. I think he's either false bragging or completely nuts. Hitting a deer at 150 is game over.

I hit a deer at 20 mph and it was game over, 150 would just make a deader deer.

Game over for the driver, not just the deer.

Count your blessings, not everyone is as fortunate https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/local/2016/11/16/fair-grove-man-killed-when-deer-comes-through-windshield/93954204/ I've twice struck deer in a vehicle -- once as a driver and once as a passenger. As a driver -- the deer passed rather harmlessly to me and my vehicle underneath. In the other case the deer leaped just before impact and landed square on the windshield -- completely shattering it -- fortunately, the driver had slowed to 35 mph at that point so the deer didn't penitrate the passenger compartment. With my colleage's low slung Audi R8 -- the windshield is exactly at the height of a "deer in the headlights" body.

I predict that it is closed today. https://www.kxly.com/mudslide-shuts-down-part-of-north-cascades-highway-for-the-night/

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.
