While at the REI's "thrift store" I laid on the most comfortable cot in the world. $80. I saw what I think was the same cot for $220 at Cabella's. It wouldn't have fit in the Honda Element so I passed it up. It sure was comfortable though! Cots for car camping?

I sleep in a honda fit but I am short. Home depot sells 3 inch thick foam pads that fits in the car.

Cots are great for getting you up off the lumpy, damp ground. Also great when camping on sand. In cool weather you'll also need an insulating pad to keep your bottom from getting cold.

Memory foam is good, 'cept it can be hard when the trailer is cold.
I have a heated mattress pad that runs off 12 volt power to soften up the foam when it is cold. I usually sleep better in the trailer than at home, even when parked behind a Cenex station next to idling trucks in Nort' Dasota.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

We had a four season expedition tent from Sierra designs. Used a couple “Chinese” army tents from Fred’s in it for car camping with a couple self inflating pads. Worked well until we got pop up camper.

I outfit my Toyota Sienna with a cot behind the drivers seat. On the passenger side, I leave just the third row seat for reading at night when it's too cold or wet out. I have tubs to slide under the cot to hold food and gear. The cot is held by straps to the seat anchors. I use a closed-cell foam pad for insulation, two if it's cold (have used down to 5 degrees in Yellowstone in winter). Makes for a tidy rig and super comfortable.
