"The road to Barlow Pass and Big Four Ice Caves will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. The Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit, in collaboration with the United State Forest Service, will close the gates near Deer Creek and Bedal Campgrounds on Mountain Loop Highway for the winter season. There will be no vehicle access to Barlow Pass, Big Four Ice Caves or any points in between those gates. These places will only be accessible by foot until the road is re-opened in the spring. This closure occurs every winter."

Tom, I still think we need a "Dislike" button.

Is there a "usual" time of year when it reopens? It's actually not that high of a road so I'd assume it thaws pretty quick, but it doesn't seem like they're ever in a huge hurry to open it.

Typically between mid to late May.

The road not only needs to have all the snow melt off, but also needs to dry out.
While the roadbed still has a high level of moisture in it from melting snow, vehicle traffic creates potholes and other wear much more quickly.
Of course this is where a fat tire ebike is really useful, for accessing Mountain Loop terrain while the snow up higher is still in good shape and the parking lots aren't overflowing with cars from other travelers.

Is search and rescue involved because they do a sweep of trailheads prior to the closure?
