I have an older, but still in quite good shape, Sierra Designs 3-layer goretex jacket. I recently machine-washed said jacket in warm water on gentle cycle, which caused some of the tape on the taped seams to pull away.
What I'm wondering is how to fix it. This is mostly an "in town" jacket, although I've sometimes used it for sea kayaking, but it's a bit heavy for hiking. Would it work to just re-glue the tape back on using maybe Seamgrip, Aquaseal (or similar) glue? (I don't really care if it loses breathability through the seam-tape)
Or is it better to just bite the bullet, buy some new tape, then iron it on (I'm a bit nervous about ironing an old goretex jacket for fear of damaging it).
Any suggestions, especially based on experience, most welcome!
I have a roll of goretex tape, recently basically reassembled an Arc teryx jacket that was delaminating one seam at a time. in case what you did doesn't hold, ironing the tape on worked fine. the first pass I didnt have the iron hot enough, so I gradually raised the heat until it sealed. I replaced the jacket anyway, but the old one is fine for less serious adventures.
Even though I'm still a bit paranoid about putting a "sufficiently hot" iron on my jacket, the reports I've read (including yours) don't seem to show a lot a problems from the iron. Thanks
