Kleet, If that drawing ain't Image Lake, I'm imagining something. Now you can't camp at that spot -- they've moved camps well away from the lake.

I suggest that Green Trails deletes trails from their maps either because the Forest Service asks them to remove them or they have a policy to only include trails that reflect the current status of formal Forest Service or National Park trail systems. Most mapmaker want to provide useful information on maintained trails. Overgrown and missing trails are not real popular with the typical hiking public. I recall sometime in the not too distant past that the Olympic National Park requested that either Green Trails or Custom Trail Map(?) remove some of the informal cross country routes or trails on their maps which the Park Service does not consider to be part of the formal trail network. Don't throw out any of your old maps they can quite useful in determing the routes for old trails. If you old maps and don't want them anymore please give them someone who will preserve them for future generations. The same applies for web sites. There once was a web site with information on abandoned trails in area west and north of Mt Rainier National Park (for example a historical route to Summit Lake). The site is no longer available and I regret not saving a digital copy for future reference.

I may have posted this once before but will again. Check out Early Washington Maps: A Digital Collection. Takes you to a search and there are a number of old Rainier maps with trails. Lots of goodies. UW Library NN smile.gif

It's pretty safe to say that if we take all of man kinds accumulated knowledge, we still don't know everything. So, I hope you understand why I don't believe you know everything. But then again, maybe you do.

Sweeeeeeet! biggrin.gif I now have something do pour over for the next month. Some day I'm gonna have to go pillage the UW library. tongue.gif BTW - Speaking of maps, I discovered a few goodies in the King Co. Library system. They've now got the National Geographic State Topo CDROM set for Oregon, and some of Maptech's products (I found one at Kirkland that covers roughly Whidbey Island to Twisp, no 3d option in this one though).

The vast majority of abandoned trails are due to lack of maintenance and/or destruction caused by to roadbuilding or resource extraction, particularly logging. In some cases they are combined with other trails, rerouted and/or renumbered. The FS used to maintain a large network of trails for firefighting, but they abandoned many of those years ago. I suspect the trails heading to the Canadian border (except PCT) are not high on the priority list since most of them aren't going to a popular destination. BTW, here's a partial list of abandoned/unmaintained in the Okanogan NF (including the section of Mt Baker/Snoqualmie east of NCNP, which is administered by Okanogan). Quite a few of these are in the Pasayten Wilderness. Milage added, per request [12/28]. I'll submit what I have soon. It's too late tonight. Much of this comes from an old Government database called TRIS.

Maybe we should create an archive of old trails here at NWHikers. cool.gif

I think it would be good to add the abandoned trails lists to the master links.

Nice list Rich. One word stands out very big tho. Partial, as in meaning there's more? Jeez, and that's only Okanogan NF? You have one fine database. NN up.gif

Get this dudes. There is a solid green trail on the Coleman Peak Green Trails map. Guess what? There was NEVER a trail there. You gotta find out which one it was! I found out the hard way!

Art is an adventure.

If you're talking about the Abandoned Trails site it's been in the master list for quite some time.
