Not great to see it there as vinca is an extremely invasive pest.

A fun kid's story: When God made the world, everything was in black and white. God went to little Periwinkle and said "it's your job to take this pot of colors and paint the world." Periwinkle did as he was told, and he got the very last color - greyish blue. To this day, he keeps his paintbrush in case he has to paint something else. While you're telling the story, carefully pull the petals off of a vinca flower. You'll find the sepals and stamens form a nice little round paintbrush. A bit of a thread hi-jack, but the story popped into my head and I had to share it.

My Grandma used to tell them to us when we were little. She had a fantastic garden all overgrown with neat plants and little hidey holes. We would spend hours out there wandering around and telling stories. Another one that's stayed at the top of my head about bleeding hearts: A long time ago there lived a beautiful princess named Dicentra. The prince in the neighboring country just knew he had to marry her. His mother the queen was very jealous, though, because Dicentra was so beautiful. On the day of the wedding, the queen turned Princess Dicentra into a flower so that she could never marry the prince. To this day, Princess Dicentra wears her wedding gown on the day she was supposed to marry. If you very carefully take the bleeding heart petals and pull them back as far as possible, then use some imagination, you'll see a Cinderella-type dress shape.

Oh oh oh!!! A story about me? wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif I LOVE IT!!!! I'd love to hear all of your stories! I use them in my naturalist lectures on the trail. lol. Tell me more!! winksmile.gif Do you know the one about Indian Paintbrush? When the creator was putting the finishing touches on the world, one of the last things He did was to paint the sunset. He used red, pink, purple and yellow paints, throwing his brushes over his shoulder as he worked. Everywhere a brush landed, that is where the paintbrush grows and that is why Indian Paintbrush is only found in the colors of the sunset.
