hey Tom, I'm looking at setting up phpBB myself. Which MODs have you installed to make things work well? In particular, is the photo-attachment solution (with the recent flickr links) your own hack or an existing mod? If you have any comments about the major hassles you've had with phpBB, I'd appreciate any you've got time to share. Thanks much!

Many of the mods are my own, including the flickr integration which I coded from scratch using phpflickr for the API calls. I can give you the code if you want. I have no hesitation about recommending phpbb as a bulletin board. It has been very stable and is very customizable, particularly if you know how to code. The annoyances are few and minor, and there's usually a mod somewhere if it doesn't do what you want. The only thing I think is critical to add is an active topics link in the header, similar to the 1 day search link I added up top which returns the greater of 1 day or all new posts since last visit.
