Yesterday we decided to try an old favorite. Due to the low snow and plethora of other permits we had not got a snow park. On the way there was a fully involved van burning beside the road like something out of the Goddard film "WeekenD, not a good omen . We went to the FS office at Summit West and got a one day permit $9 . We then drove to Iron Horse where the lot was full and they were turning people away. The cop said, "No refunds". We resisted and persisted and finnaly 5 cars went down the road and we were allowed to proceed. It was suprisingly cold with a brisk wind. We proceeded down the abandoned railroad roadbed in quite good condition now crossing a dry creek to the turnoff to the old road from Hyak and "the common corridor. There were a lot of skiers on the loop many of whom were skaters who would blow by then stop in front of you. At the end of the corridor we hhheaded up to the pass. It was hard to find the blue diamonds as they were 20' above the ground. There were many logs that had to be scrambled over and skins were a necessity. There were no tracks. After attaing the pass we headed down in crusty snow. Note: Foglegs is closed due to low snow making it difficult to attain the hidden valley trail without "trespassing" on the groomed tracks. We got back around 5:30 and many were heading up in the dark , go figure. It would be good with about 4' more snow.
