Trees and shrubs starting to bud, nice sunny days, birds moving in from the south, even saw a bee flying around. Spring's a-comin!

It's pretty safe to say that if we take all of man kinds accumulated knowledge, we still don't know everything. So, I hope you understand why I don't believe you know everything. But then again, maybe you do.

Crocuses are blooming all over my back garden but Spring does not officially arrive until my Trillium are up. A friend found a couple of monsterously tall ones at a nursery years back and gave them to me. They keep expanding and now I get about 15. The biggest ones are more than a foot tall. Nothing beats Trillium in your garden to announce Spring.

I like watching the birds as a barometer of spring. I saw a hummingbird tanking up with nectar from a red-flowering currant two days ago. My own definition of spring though is when I see swallows return. That hasn't happened yet.

Tree Swallows might be the exception. They often here already by mid-February. I watched them last week on the Samish Flats. Anna's Hummingbird stays around all winter.

Sorry, it's not spring until the yellow of the dandelion graces the grass.

Signs of spring
|
|
|
last day of February, 2003.
Thank heavens spring's coming. It always seem to come just in time for those of us who suffer SAD.
