High grade logging is just what it sounds like. They only cut the highest value trees and the highest grade logs. The cream of the crop. Since they had to snake those logs through the lower value trees they didn't bother to knock down by cable, or wandered around with a cat, or built a lot of road, they left a poorly stocked and often damaged stand in their wake. Not replanted. Very susceptible to disease and fire. Ineficient method of growing another crop which results in more ground needed for future wood production.
