Early is good but not as early as some of you. I like to be on the trail in Summer by 7:00-8:30 so I try to get on the road by about 6:30 or 7:00. It's sometime tough to find other who are morning oriented. With an early start the weather is cool and the crowds are small. I also like to get to a destination and spend hours. I usually bring a book and sit on a summit or at a lake to read. I also like to take a snooze in the afternoon sun. I have fallen asleep on more summits than I can remember. A great day for me is 10+ miles round trip to a neat destination, hours enjoying it, and still getting home at a reasonable hour. Also, I wilt in the afternoon sun. I can come down just fine but I die going up. Early starts solve that problem.

So much for how early folks start hiking. What I'd like to know is how early, and how late, that folks check in on Trail Talk? I normally like to check in pretty early, so I can catch the cunrise on my monitor as a new message from Backpacker Joe is dicplayed. Some people prefer to check in very late at night, due to a long day on the trail or having a day job. So... when do you check NWhikers.net? Early? Late? and how many times a day? C'mon, cpill the beans.

Depends on the weather. If it sucks check in. if not wait until you can not hike.

In the morning, 4-5a A few times thru the day if at work. (it's against the law) and more if I'm at home. Of course if I'm gone then I don't check at all. NN

It's pretty safe to say that if we take all of man kinds accumulated knowledge, we still don't know everything. So, I hope you understand why I don't believe you know everything. But then again, maybe you do.

I get up at 4:30 AM M - F. I am used to an early start, whether I like it or not. As Salish said, "observing the world" while lingering in the morning at a great camp is the best part of backpacking.
