Life’s Great Mystery, no matter how well our intentions maybe we never really know what‘s going to happen until it does. It’s after the fact when we can reflect back and see what a Mystery Life really is. Saturday at Ed’s Memorial Services I had a chance to talk with Dayhike Mike and during our conversation he mentioned Ed’s ashes, this was the first time that I heard of this and immediately I thought how great it would be to take some of Ed with us on the Tribute scramble to Big Snow. This was my first time meeting and talking with DHM and to express what I was feeling was a bit awkward, but I felt strong enough to get the words out and DHM agreed. As the memorial was winding down and I found myself in Ricks Ed’s Brother) presences I could see in face and body language that he was having a hard time with something he was wanting to share with me. The words finally stammered out of his mouth… would you mind taking some of Ed’s ashes and releasing him on Big Snow? At this time I was reminded how magical Life’s experiences can be. Sometimes it feels like something behind the scenes is directing my life and putting people in front of me to remind me how connected we really are to each other, in Spirit and mind. My first response was sharing what DHM and I discussed earlier in the day. The tension was released and we all marveled in the fact that we were all thinking the same. Rick said that Ed told him if ever the time came that he would want his ashes spread across the Cascades Mountains. I said to Rick something like, I never had the chance to meet your Brother and this is the first time meeting you and because of the character of your Brother and how he effect all of his relations in a good way I wanted to honor him by creating the Ed Miller’s Traveling Summit Register Memorial. Now this was going to be the perfect vehicular to get this request done. Who knew that this was to manifest in the way that it had in less than 5 days. Because of Jeff Rodgers desire to do a tribute scramble in honor of Ed Miller, the many people who knew and some that knew of him were able to get this done. I’m completely blown away by everyone’s dedication to make this happen. Action Betty Dicey Dayhike Mike Jeff R. Roller Pair Quark Tom D. Putz in Bootz Mesahchie Mark Randy Peppersteak & Ale Malachai Constant Tazz naturealbeing I’m honored in saying that the placing of the Ed Miller’s Traveling Summit Register Memorial (”EMTSRM”) was placed Sunday the 13th of August 2006 on the summit of Big Snow. Everyone in our party made it to the summit in honor of a great man and now it’s up to somebody/some bodies to get that register and take it to another peak and help celebrate Ed’s life. Some things to be mindful and respectful of: The “ENTSRM” contains a film container with some of Ed’s ashes and with the blessings of Ed’s family members they have directed me to make this available for the dispersal on each peak that the register is taken to. I would ask at this time that when and if you do come across the register that you be respectful and handle Ed’s ashes in a Sacred manor. Please release a pinch of Ed on each peak that you take the “EMTSRM’ to. By doing this you are honoring Ed's and his family’s request, along with celebrating one of Ed’s great passions by being in the mountains. I would also like to mention that all of the messages written to Ed on the day of his Memorial has been placed in the “EMTSRM” and is now available to those that come across it to come to know what a great man Ed was. I invite anyone with the passion of mountaineering to join in this celebration by retrieving the register and placing it on another peak. If you decide to do so please post when you have removed the register and post again once you have placed it with its new location. I would encourage you to write a TR and share any pictures of you trip. Thank you in advance and have a safe and incredible journey. Action Betty, Dicey, Dayhike Mike, Jeff R., Roller Pair, Quark, Tom D., Putz in Bootz, Mesahchie Mark, Randy, Peppersteak & Ale, Malachai Constant, and Tazz, thanks for participating in the placing of the“EMTSRM”. I will never forget all that you have shared with me on this day, it was priceless and there will always be a special place in my Heart and Mind for this memory to reside. Please share with me and others with your words and pictures of our experience on Big Snow and the placing of the EMTSRM” “LOVE In All You Do!” Richard Brayton AKA naturealbeing

A couple notes: For those worried about our party size, note that we travelled in widely dispersed smaller groups throughout the course of the trip. Typical "party" size was 4 or less for any group of people. The one time we were all together for any period of time was on top of the mountain, where aside from me leaving a little wine behind, there really was minimal impact. What can I say, it was a beautiful day and we enjoyed it to the fullest. After gathering up at Ken's Truck Stop at 6am, we finally hit the road heading up the MFK at 6:20am. Got to the trailhead 2 hours later and were on the trail at 8:30am. The brushy tunnel of a trail provided a welcome relief from the heat of sunlight for a good portion of the route to Lower Hardscrabble. We hung out in the rock garden at the head of the lake before heading on up the steep boot path that takes you to the upper lake. We rounded the lake and began heading up the talus. We all went up the wrong way, scrambling up the left side of a waterfall, then crossing over to the right in order to exit out and find the real boot path. The real route heads up through the cliff bands higher up, at the top of the talus / heather gully. After the requisite brush bash up the waterfall, we were thankful to be out in the open and heading straight up on talus and occasional scree to the saddle up top. We had beautiful views of Burntboot, Overcoat, Chimney Rock, and eventually Summit Chief as we rose up, up, up and crested through the saddle. Once on top, Dicey and Putz in Boots headed up to the top to join naturealbeing, Malachai Constant, Roller Pair, and Mesachie Mark. Randy, Tom, Jeff R, and I all traversed across the talus to reach Ed's Tarn for a quick dip in the refreshing waters. Tazz hung out with Peppersteak'n'Ale, Action Betty, and Quark enjoying the photogenic opportunities presented by the football field. Eventually we all made the leisurely rise to the summit and enjoyed relaxing there until 3:30pm or so. Group photos were taken, summit registers signed, and then we headed down. The drop is always quicker than the ascent...I dropped more quickly than normal because I was looking forward to another swim. NB was close behind. (He got a special award for the most original route -- straight down the mountain, managing to avoid the talus field altogether.) Tom and I had a good soak in the high-alpine waters of Upper Hardscrabble and the whole crew lounged for a bit until the last four of our party reached the shores of the lake. The remainder of the trip was a breeze. Most of us made it down without headlamps, and were lounging around enjoying Jeff R's pringles and other snacks until the last three came off the mountain at 9pm. Headed back out where 8 of us enjoyed a long wait for our food at Ken's Truck Stop. All in all, a great day out! BTW - Looking forward to seeing the pics!

Yesterday was such an incredible day - I have no doubt Ed was with us in spirit. To whoever has the pleasure of retrieving the register from Big Snow, you are in for a real treat, among the best the Cascades has to offer! To the extent you visit on a nice day, you must absolutely take the time to take a refreshing swim in "Ed's tarn" as some of us did. And if you come with others, bring a frisbee for the "football field". I had the pleasure of climbing Big Snow in the spring several years ago and while it was stunning covered with snow, unfortunately I missed both of these treasures. Ever since Mike and Ed showed me pictures from their trip a couple summers ago, I've wanted to return and experience them in person and I couldn't pass up the chance yesterday. Here are a few pictures. I have a few more shots to share, but I want to give others a chance to post some of their pictures as well...

I had an excellent time yesterday. A great group of patient freinds, these. AB & I needed "coaching" on the 12-miles-long stretch of boulders (or so it seemed). Tazz, RollerPair, Mesachie Mark & Dayhike Mike all took turns escorting us. rollerPair got us for the longest stretch, and is an excellent idiot-savant. The ever-patient Mark helped AB and I hike out in the dark (TNAB folks are experts at it). Ed was watching us all, and I feel he certainly reached down and tweaked me with some Mojo as I fairly danced across that last boulder field on the way out. He knew there was no time for me to be a dingbat ninny out there - it was the dawn of dusk then, and we needed to be on terra firma soon. Thanks, Ed, for bringing us all together too meet and climb on such a sunny, warm (but not too) day.

It was a great tribute to Ed on a beautiful day. I felt privileged to be able to go on the outing and celebrate Ed's passion for the mountains. It was cool to finally hike with so many of the famous NWHiker folks as well. I was even able to draft behind a few of them on the ascent which helped my weary legs. Besides the summit, the highlight for me was visiting and swimming in Ed's Tarn. What an amazing spot to spend a little time! A few more pictures:

Great trip, folks. I never met Ed but it's always good to pay respects to a fellow mountain traveler. Everybody made it all the way to the top, so congratulations all 15 (don't forget Ed was there too). Because Quark is a datahead, here's the stats: 3900 gain, 8 miles RT, 14800 boulders, two soccer fields, two lakes, 18 tarns, no runs, no hits, and few routefinding errors. (If anyone wants a .tpo file, send me an email address via private massage.) Ed, thanks for the trip.

What a touching, special, spectacular day! There will never be another day like this day. I know Ed was with us the whole way. I believe he showered us all with his strength and love for this trip. The incredible beauty of this area is breathtaking. The rock, oh... the rock! I love rock! The foot ball field and the ridge that leads to the summit, is a place I could spend hours (or days) poking around, taking pics and enjoying it. This day will forever be close to my heart, and be the best trip I have ever taken into the mountains. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of it. Thank-you Ed! Thank-you ALL! Tom & Randy, thanks for the beautiful shots of Ed’s Tarn . What a beautiful spot.

Hey AB & Tazz, I'm glad you both could make it up here for the memorial and hike and doubly glad you two made it home in one piece!

What an incredible, unforgettable day. I'm honored I could be a participant on this occasion to remember Ed. It was a privilege to share the day with such a great group of people, and becoming acquainted with DHM, PnB, PSA, Randy, RP, and Quark (all very cool folks) was a bonus. Ed's memory was well served. Great pictures Tom. Always good to see pics of more than just the scenery. It's nice to put a face with the posts. That first picture of Quark Talus hopping, looks more like she has just stumbled and is about to do a face plant on the rocks below. eek.gif
