I'm going to be needing a new car soon, and I just want something that runs decently, gets good gas mileage, and is dirt cheap. Help a starving college student out =)

I've been seeing some real cute commercials for this Nissan lately: http://www.nissanusa.com/versa/ If you want a new car, I don't think you'll find anything "dirt cheap", but as far as new car prices go this isn't bad -$12.5.
My short-term memory is not as sharp as it used to be.

If you need something dirt cheep, look for a used Ford Escort, which are often a good value. Escorts are pretty good cars from a reliability standpoint, but undervalued because everybody wants Toyotas and Hondas and are suspicious of Ford products.

That's good advice. The Escorts benefit by association with Ford's fancier, less reliable, cars. There's not much to go wrong with an Escort with manual windows and door locks. A friend of mine had hers for years and years and well over 200,000 miles.
The Geos that GM produced with Toyota at the NUMMI plant are great cars, too. Everyone knows they are Corollas, though, so the prices probably aren's as good as a contemporary Escort.
