The article on this page is about The Big Blowup; a huge wildfire around the beginning of the 20th century. And more.

Ranger Ed Pulaski stood at that mine entrance and threatened to shoot anyone who tried to exit the hole. This is the beginning of a sometimes troubled Forest Service.

The primary hand tool for digging fireline, the Pulaski, is named after old Ed Pulaski. In my younger days I wielded one for many a day, through the first half of the 1980's, while on a Darrington Ranger District fire crew, from the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Alas, those truly were the good old days!

HCN has done several other features on fires and fire prevention in the western states and the results. I urge anyone interested in western issues to subscribe. It's a great little fish wrapper

Great article, thank you. I bought a Pulaski Axe about a year ago, what a remarkable tool. Very handy for trail work and even camp work. I didn't know the details of the story though.

My Dad was a Ranger in the sixties, building trails and fighting fires, etc. We had a number of "retired" Pulaskis around the farm. A great tool; I think I'm going to check e-bay!
Here's a link to the story of Washington's worst forest fire.
