I worked in a small outdoor shop and was amazed at how profitability was the only important thing. We were told to convince people that they needed whatever we had left in stock. You had to look over your shoulder if you were going to give people any good advice.
As I'm sure you all realize, business is business. Specialty shops like REI, Pro Mtn. Sports, Mountain Gear, etc... cater to us hiking/climbing types with gear and (hopefully) sound service and advice. But let's not forget the bottom line with any business...PROFIT.

If you felt so bad about taking back her 10% dividend on the Headlamp, then you should just give it back to her. Or else get her number and give it to them if you buy something at REI.
