We beat the hike by hiking from Deer Creek to Silver Falls via the East Side Trail in Mount Rainier National Park. This was on Saturday and it was still too hot for some of us (including me) but there is something about gazing upon torrents, waterfalls, rocky grottos festooned with delicate ferns and tiny flowers that is refreshing. The trail is in excellent condition -- we met only one other small group of hikers about mid-way though we did run into quite a few people at Silver Falls and a few at the Grove of the Patriarchs. It was a good day -- long, but pleasant. The only unpleasantness was the long, drive home. Air conditioner not working so drove back home with windows down and trashy music going full-blast to drown out the metallic roar of the I-5 cataract. Karen
