A shockwave from a coronal eruption on the sun last week should arrive in the earths geomagnetic field sometime in the next 24 hours. Keep an eye out to the N during night hours.
If you look here:
http://www.sec.noaa.gov/pmap/pmapN.html
and the activity level is higher than 8 and there's red all over Washington on the map, take a look.

Things are kicking up, on the previous site there's red appearing and we're up to level seven.
A look here:
http://www.sec.noaa.gov/ace/MAG_SWEPAM_24h.html
will show the step in velocity, density, and temperature as sharp increases, then at UT 6 hours for the 17th the upper red line swings negative and this indicates a less intense magnetic field vector above the N pole, allowing an aurora to kick on.

Once in a great while we can make it out down here in southern oregon. I have some pics of it from last year. Nothing great, but it's unusual.
If anyone can take and post some pics I'd love to see it.
