Teneriffe 5/31/07
TNAB went big and closed out May with a hike up Mt Teneriffe, Mt Si's big sister. Our route: Kamikaze Falls. Giving deference to Teneriffe's reputation, we fielded our lowest turnout of the year - only nine hikers showed up!
Roster: Anastasia, Andrew (ADrewzki), Chris (CHR15), Dale (newbie!), Damon (Damon), Don (Malachai Constant), Drew, Joseph, and Yours Truly
We were a little late getting to the trailhead, a gated forest road at the end of Mt Si Drive (or whatever it is), and commenced hiking shortly after 6:00 PM. The next twenty-five minutes were spent hiking said forest road, a tedious task to say the least. Finally, we reached THE trailhead, a fork to the right, and started some serious hiking!
First order of business was ditching the sixpack of Sierra Pale into the stream. Must earn our reward! Then, it was full tilt to Kamikaze Falls. The Falls did not disappoint, but they were a mere trickle of what I know they can be, under the right conditions. A short time after that, we reached the halfway point of the hike, where the trail gains the ridge.
By the time you get to the ridge, you've made it through the most taxing part of the hike. Which means, you're kinda spent for the marginally less taxing ridge run. Still, we forged our way upward, undaunted. As time crept by, I kept an eye out for when I could break free and take the scramble route. I had to wait about 45 minutes...
The trail reaches a small clearing, and the scramble route is visible to the right. I make a move in that direction, and I'm instantly rewarded with an awesome view of Mt Rainier to the south. Wow. I start the scramble, get part way through a move, when I realize something is falling under me. I thought it was a rock, but it turned out to be one of Andrew's radios. I am not in a position to retrieve it immediately.
I complete the scramble to the top of Teneriffe, arriving just after 8:00 PM. Woo Hoo! The rest of the party gets there at about the same time - and I do mean party! Thanks to Joseph and Drew for the extra libations. It's breezy on the summit, which keeps the bugs away. The views are very nice, if a bit hazy. If only the full moon would've risen sooner!
We leave the summit around 8:30 PM. Don helped me retrieve Andrew's radio, then we busted our knees trying to catch up to the rest of the group. The ridge run seems to last forever. We pass the Falls again in the dwindling twilight, and then stumble out to the forest road around 9:45 PM, where a cold one is waiting for me. Yes, the reward was earned!

Yep. Teneriffe was every bit as difficult and arduous as everyone said it would be. The weather was a tad muggy and hot but really nice towards the top. Views were amazing. Looking forward to something easier next week.

The fun TR and photos almost have me wishing I was up there with you all. But glad I decided to pass to recover from Wednesday's case of heat exhaustion. Still, I missed you TNAB! One day there will be brownies again.

My GPS had 908ft at the car and 4736ft at the top. That's like....um...carry the one....a lot. I've been told that the hike is roughly four miles as well but I only got 5.7mi RT.

Sounds like a great hike. Had a meeting I needed to attend, so wasn't able to make it this week. Planning to hit the trail with you guys next week tho.

I'm envious: I drive from N Seattle and the traffic situation is getting impossible. Wishing I had wings to fly over the lake: reached I-90 x 405 by 5:45 and reluctantly had to give it up since I was going to miss you at the TH by 30 minutes and didn't know the waterfalls trail... Maybe I should start a Thursday morning TNAB. Hope to see you next week. tdd

Haha. I was wondering if you'd pick up on that. Did you two have a good anniversary? See you next week hopefully.
