This was my second hike in the Desolation Wilderness. This hike was billed as the one to do if you can only do one. It lived up to that billing. The trail follows an old gravel road for a mile to the old now museum glen alpine resort. There is a spring bubbling up with mineral water that in the past was sold to those seeking a health elixir. The buildings remain and it was interesting to see how they relaxed at the turn of the century. The trail leaves the old resort and goes up through woods and open areas at times along a fast clear stream. After 3.7 miles and 1700 feet it reaches Gilmore lake which was rather large but in my opinion not as picturesque as some we have in the Cascades. The hike was well worth it and I particulary liked the openness of the surroudings which I prefer to deep forest hikes. The scenery was rocky as is many of the Tahoe hikes.
