Klone Peak
Steve and I made several contingency plans, not knowing how the weather was going to play out , but NOAA weather radio is the most accurate calling for partly sunny skies for the E. slopes , and the Entiat area seems to be in a rain shadow alot of times. We tried to get up the Duncan Ridge trail, but downfall was over the road near the beginning so we fell back on Klone Peak as a destination, one I had looked at a long time and seemed to be in a position to offer excellent viewbagging opportunities .
We were on the trail around 0715 under mostly sunny skies, starting out at around 4400-4500', it was comfortable probably in the 40s and we headed W to gain the ridge that would take us N along an undulating ridgeline. The area is densely forested here except for a section of ghost forest, lots of lupine, but not much else.
Initial entry into the ghost forest section. ghost forest Offtrail through the ghost forest to a highpoint on the ridge.
We hit about four 6k' highpoints off trail and straight up avoiding the low grade switchbacking trail as much as possible.
Meandering through the ghost forest Highpoint ahead of us on a section of open ridge. Most of the route had us in forest.
This is motorcycle country, but none had been up here yet it appeared and only the noise of an occasional woodpecker, wind, and creeking tree was heard. We eventually ran into hard snow which became all snow on the upper section of the ridge.
Tyee Ridge with highpoints and Tyee and Signal mountains Wind blowing snow off a nearby peak. The winds would pickup at times with a cool chill to them. Saska Peak Emerald Peak, Point 7901, Cardinal Peak, and Point 8339' Pyramid Peak Part of the long ridge we came up with Tyee Ridge beyond and to the right, Four Mile Ridge and Stormy Mtn. far left.
That along with the dense tree cover and two trails an old and a new one each going there own way made it interesting, eventually there was just hard packed snow. So looking around it can be a little disorienting seeing only the lower sections of trees and snow.
Near the end of the ridge and between Klone navigation was not linear, but more of a meandering with dense forest cover and hard snow covering the ground. Nice trail along the S wall of Klone Kelly Mountain north face and Devil Lake below
We were never more than several hundred feet off track and popped out on the edge of the ridgeline that we left just E. of Klone and followed the ridgeline to Klones S. side between Kelly mountain and took snow, dirt, scree, and pumice straight up to just W. of the summit.
That left us with a drifted snowy walk to the summit, the drifts were still 10' high in places and the views to the N, S, E were stunning.
Point 7324, Garland Peak, and Devils Smokestack Devils Smokestack from the south. Which gully do you take ? Duncan Ridge and Duncan Hill Crook Mountain South Spectacle Butte ? Tin Pan Mountain ? Steve on top of the 10' drift. we were surprised at all the snow still hanging in on summits, highpoints, south and east facing areas. Chiwawa Ridge Cornices on the N side of Kelly with Tyee Ridge in the background.
There is an old lookout there where we had lunch in the sun, wind protected and were amazed at the vantage point we had. The cloud deck was variable, but probably around 8500', good views of everything except Maude, 7fj, Fernow.
Lunch at the old lookout.
We had talked about looping around behind Kellly to Two Little Lakes, Blue Creek Meadow and down Tommy Creek, but with all the eye candy we must have lost our minds, because we didn't bring it up again until we were well back on the main ridge, what's up with that ? a senior moment or something ? Anyhow we followed the edge of the ridges back cutting every switchback we could and liking it ! Another great day in the mountains.
Drifted ridge to the summit, some drifts were still 10' high. Looking South from Lower section of trail on Klone, Devils Lake, Kelly Mountain, Four Mile Ridge section of Devils Backbone, with Stormy and Baldy Mountain and the ridge we came up. That was a long ridge. Nice sidewalk if you can get it. Good size drift along the ridge between Klone Peak 6820' and point 6518' Near the end of the ridge and between Klone navigation was not linear, but more of a meandering with dense forest cover and hard snow covering the ground. Meandering through the ghost forest
Near the end of the main I looked over to see two motorcycles parked and we noticed some cut logs, we saw no one though and heard nothing.

OK, I'll bite. So which gully are we going to take?

Wondrful Pictures. The area isn't open to motorcycles until at least the middle of July and even then they don't seem to be much of a bother.
Thanks again for the pictures-they show lots of my favorite areas.

Thanks. It was a busy weekend. Nobody could get out on the same day and my daughter was cleared for activity once her PT was done, so she wanted to get out also. I suffered through it all . Lichtenberg Mountain trip with Get Out and Go was a short, sweet trip, with alot of diversity as far as terrain.Great views and exercise though. Looks like a busy summer - fall ahead.

Another fine report Rob, Thanks for the reminding me that I need to get back in there and enjoy the views of that area.
Here's a couple more pics to throw into the mix. BTW, Fred Beavon has a great report on Garland, Devils Smokestack, and Rampart Mtn. It should be in the database or maybe over at WTA, worth reading!
Fifth of July Mtn.-Devils Smokestack Pano 6.29.05. Devils Smokestack 6.29.05.
