We left Seattle Friday about 5, and made it to the trail head around 9 pm. We made camp that first night at the little round spot on the left about 1/8 of a mile down the trail -- WAY more comfortable than sleeping in the car. Got to the meadows around 9 am Saturday and snagged a camp site off the main trail. We have 3 dogs, so I like to keep them out of everybody's way as much as possible. The meadows were beautiful. Flowers currently in bloom include queen's cup, indian paintbrush, merten's bluebells, glacier lilies, columbine, some early lupine, and a couple of indian pipe. It started to rain Saturday evening, but slackened off by dawn Sunday. Sunday morning I headed up toward Spider Gap on a really good and STEEP trail. Didn't run into snow till above larch nob. the glacier is still snow covered, didn't see any serious crevasses. The scramble route on the side of the glacier looks a little dicey from the snow cover still. Managed to get back to the car before the clouds really let loose again. Gorgeous first backpack of the season!
The trail to the meadows is in fantastic shape. This is a really easy 5 miles, moderate grade and no dicey spots. The trail to larch nob is in fair shape, steep loose soil and lots of little rolley rocks under foot but nothing terribly difficult. The route down to Lyman lake looks good, just bring an ice ax and be ready for steep snow.
Pictures as soon as we get them sorted.
