Silver Peak via Windy Pass: 8/16/07
For the second time this year, TNAB convened at Windy Pass, this time to specifically hike up Silver Peak. The weather was beautiful - for March - cool, cloudy and would prove to be quite breezy. At least there were fewer bugs (I think). Even so, we had a nice group: Chris S (CHR15), Don (Malachai Constant), (Geo)Tom, Joseph (GQ Joe Hiker), Larry, Jeremy and Tisha (Schmidt Altitude), Steve (Yukon222), Yet & Yours Truly. Four canines were also in attendance.
Also present, but unbeknownst to us at the time, did somewhere lurk the "Phantom"...(cue the spooky music)...
...It takes a while to get to Windy Pass, so our start time was a little late, around 6:20 PM. In typical TNAB fashion, our crew bolted down the trail like crazed hounds after a fox. The trail is in good shape, with a few patches of mud, and the creek crossings are completely dry.
We made excellent time. By the time our group made the saddle, we heard whoops of joy from Tinkham: Joseph and Steve decided to tag it first, before heading over to Silver. Nice! As we approached Silver, the clouds rolled in and covered the summit with an impenetrable fog. No views tonight!
It would take us approximately 90 minutes to reach the top. Joseph and Steve arrived huffing and puffing just as the main group was gathering. We shared some libations (no!), jokingly pointed out all the peaks we couldn't see, then packed up to head out, all within 15 minutes.
With sunset now around 8:20 PM, it sure gets dark fast. Headlamps were required for the last mile or so. As we exited (9:20 PM) the trail at Windy Pass, our "eleventh man", Steve N, was waiting for us. Several times now, Steve N has tried to join us on hikes, but he gets a late start because of work. Invariably, he takes a wrong turn on somewhere, and seemingly pops up out of nowhere at the end. Hence, he is now known as the "Phantom"!
Seven of us followed up the hike with a stop at, where else, the NBB&G. The service was much better this time.
Good Hike, good times!

Very sorry I was not to make it tonight despite the clouds. Alas, last week was my last tnab outing of the year, as I had to return to NY last night. I'll be keeping tabs on y'all from back east and hope to post a tr from nyc. It was my pleasure to hook up with everyone this summer. I hope to be out next summer for as many tnabs as I'm able to attend. Drop me a line if any of you are in ny and I'll try to steer you away from danger in the big city.

Would have redoubled my sad efforts had I known GeoTom would be there. Is it just me, or does Jeremy look extra shredded coming off the nine days in ALW?

Another fabulous TNAB "run for the money". . .or is that "run for your life." Kirk: we're going to miss you. Yukon Steve: as usual, kicked on the afterburners and throttled it up. Damn, you do rock!!! The 36 minute diversion was well worth it, eh?
After the Chianti, I thought I could see the sunset on the way down from Silver . . .or was that Yet's headlamp blinding me?
Imagine having to imagine it . . .

Yes, GQ, it was definitely worth it to snag Tinkham before flying over to Silver! Sorry I won't be able to make TNAB this week. Experienced a little foot crushing from a 250 lb slab of granite Saturday up at Snowy Lakes. It's getting slightly better but doubt I'll be up for a TNAB pounding pace in just a few days.
