open a command prompt * windows-r * type "cmd" (no quotes), enter * type "shutdown /a" (no quotes), enter in the command window * download patches and updates and remove virus if that doesn't work start in safe mode and delete msblast.exe (or something like that) from your windows or system or system32 directory. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html see also http://online.comcast.net/help/faq-detail.asp?intFaqID=334

Everyone running Windows 2000 and Windows XP should go to Windows Update if you haven't lately and install all the critical updates. This is good practice anyway, but MSBlaster has made this a necessity right now.

I can vouch for Zone Alarm. We've had 421 attempts by the blast worm in the last 2 days, all of them blocked. Of course, my computer picked up some other kind of nasty............

Also in the future pay attention to what updates you are told to install. I realize that I believe only XP will give you prompts when they are available...but they do and this patch was offered a month ago. With all of the press that this flaw was given a month ago I find it amazing so many businesses and people are being affected with this. I'm not saying you're nuts or computer-lazy for having had this happen---many individuals won't hear the news about what can happen such as in this case. But so many more should have been protected from this. I hope you have things fixed up by now!! Good luck.
