Headed up to Hurricane Ridge for my first mountain outing of more than a limited stroll since severely injuring an achilles tendon last August and was happy to confirm the darn thing has finally healed. Arrived in the parking lot at the Ridge for a pit stop with clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine. Knowing that could change rapidly due to marine low clouds to the east and north, grabbed some quick photos of favorite destinations under this winter's heavy snow.

Headed back down the highway about 0.4 mile from the east end of the Hurricane parking lot to the turnout on the west side of the highway where parking is allowed for skiers and snowshoers heading out the Obstruction Point Road. The parking turnout is a short way downhill from this curve:

The Obstruction Point road starts just a few feet east of the east end of the main Hurricane Ridge parking lot, but it would be a mistake to retrace the road from there by snowshoe because of extremely steep sidehills just east of the Hurricane Ridge parking lot. It's much safer to drive down the highway to the parking turnout. From there, cross the highway, climb the snowbank on the east side of the highway and walk uphill to the curve in the highway, at which point you can make your way south down moderate slopes to intersect the path of the Obstruction Point Road and follow it east. As expected, shortly after gaining the Obstruction Peak road, low clouds settled in, obscuring the usually fine views from this route.

The clouds did not begin to lift until we neared the highway again.

Back up at the lodge, the clouds parted enough to reveal the rugged Burke Range to the south.

All in all, a fine day in the Olympics.

Wow! Thank you very much for the report Ancient Ambler. up.gif Fortunately for us the park service keeps that road clean and clear much of the time.

HJT is correct. The blue-sky photos of Mt. Anderson were taken from very near the Hurricane Ridge lodge, as I wanted to get some photos of the mountains before the clouds set in, as they soon did when we went from the lodge area to the nearby Obstruction Point road. HJT is also correct that Mt. Anderson is not visible from the Obstruction Point parking area, but it is just barely visible from on top of Obstruction Peak, as this photo from a couple of years ago shows:

Mt. Anderson is, as HJT says, more visible from the Grand Pass area, as this photo from Peak 6701 a couple years ago shows:

yeah ... we were camped on obstruction below eagle pt last spring in the snow ... climbed up to the ridge .. and probably looked right at it. still an awesome shot ... best view i think of the eel is from my fave place, cameron pass ... course, we haven't been on some of the high peaks, like sentinel or lost ... probably in-your-facers from there agree.gif
