We always seem to miss the turning of the larches, usually a spat of rain in September keeps us off the trails and by the time it passes the needles have all fallen. Not this time, figuring the supremely hot & dry summer we had would kick start fall colours a little early we headed up to Rainy Pass this weekend. Fortunately for us the needles were still on the larches, they were, bright, healthy and very green! No matter the trail up to Heather Pass is a delight and thanks to well maintained trail the hiking is effortless. From Heather Pass you get a first glimpse of spectacular Lewis Lake. There is no official trail to this gem but an obvious path leads over the pass and heads in that direction. The trail soon ends at a boulder field and you must hop your way across. However you never lose sight of your goal and the whole ordeal only takes about half an hour. The reward at the end well worth the effort, larches, jade coloured water and a delightful (and free!) campsite – after less than two hours of hiking. Why stop there? Although you can’t see it from the lake a very good trail climbs another 1200ft to Wing Lake at the foot of Black Peak. Wing Lake has its fair share of larches as well and lots of great places to camp. We had read that it took four hours to reach this lake but without full packs we were there in three. Scramblers can keep going up to ridges on Black Peak, we thought about it too but it was all scree and we much prefer going up snow. The summit of Black Peak looks rather imposing but allegedly it is a very doable, and popular summit. This is our second trip to this area and I doubt it will be our last. Larches look to be about two or three weeks away from peaking – don’t miss out! We’ll be back!
