Summer Solstice Hike: Snoqualmie Mtn, 6/19/08
This year's Summer Solstice Hike took place on Snoqualmie Mountain. The weather turned out to be almost perfect, with partly cloudy skies and temps in the low 60s at Alpental. As many have reported, trail access is more interesting than usual, as a wide swath of avalanche debris obscures the entrance. For the majority of the party following me, this meant an impromptu detour toward Guye Peak before superior route-finding skills lead us back on track.
The Party-Goers (in no particular order):
Matt(runs4cache) Levi Shawn Peggy(runningbird) ErinB Matt(Founder) Larry Jason Schmidt Altitude Yours Truly BarbE Troy(mountainsun) Drew(Coll) Don(Malachai Constant) Joseph(GQHiker) Colleen(cmurph) Joe B. Chris(Magnum) Steve(Yukon222) Rich(meandmyaussies) Andrew(Adrewski) John(Moosefish)
We would be on snow for the majority of the hike. There was some thought to going to Guye Peak instead, but we were able to move well despite the conditions, making it to the waterfall in about an hour (despite the detour). Another hour, and we were on top. Party Time!
From the summit, views were great in all directions except North - we could barely make out Glacier Peak. As per usual, the crew brought enough food and beverage for twice as many people. Awesome! Slowly, are summit numbers dwindled as folks departed to seek relief from the chilly breeze.
The evening's sunset was excellent.
The ample snow cover gave rise to equally ample opportunities for glissading, and this time, I was prepared! It was a joy to slide down the hill instead plodding plunge-steps. The steep section near the waterfall created a bottleneck, but everyone made it through just fine.
We finally made it back to the parking lot by 11 PM, but many of us continued to hang out, waiting for the nearly full moon to rise. Good times, good people - great hike!
Start: 6 PM
Summit: 8 PM
Exit: 11 PM
Many pics to follow (undoubtedly)...

Nice TR. Nice to know you're *ahem* doing your job writing them again. It was a great day for a hike and, having never been up Snoqualmie, was in treat for a great view. Sunset was gorgeous and I was graced by the moon and a beautiful clear night sky. Couldn't ask for a better night. And I'd better post my pictures before the real photographers make me look bad.... *edit*Too late!

It was definitely a great trip with fantastic weather and views. It was nice to have a chance to hang out a bit on top, enjoy the Summer Solstice feast summit style, and take in the views without worry of frostbite.
Good times.

Let it be known that BarbE is a fantastic glissader! And glissading should not be done without proper gear or your rumpus will be all wetus all the way down (like mine was.)

Andrew, most the credit goes to Alti-babe for showing me how the pros do it and the assurance that two handsome guys like Alti-dude or Yukon would stop me from going over the cliff. Definitely an experience worthy of getting your butt wet.

Sorry we missed what was a great sunset up high, but I really hate the bottom part of that trail on the way down. Maybe if someone would have offered to carry me down

Barb, they cheered me on for my first ever glissade at last year's TNAB's Solstice as well. I heart the S team.
