Red Mountain 7/10/08
Quick summary, as I am already way overdue on this write-up!
Attendees: Matt, Larry, Don (Malachai Constant), John (Moosefish) with Tokul, Rich (He-without-his-aussies), (Geo)Tom with Jasper, Chris (Magnum), Peggy (Runningbird), Kirk (sospeso), Damon, Gary, Joseph (GQ), and Yours Truly
Start Time: 5:55 PM from the PCT/Commonwealth Basin Trailhead on the northside of Exit 52
Conditions: The weather was quite pleasant, mostly sunny but not hot. Commonwealth Basin still has a lot of snow in it, which made it difficult to stay on the trail at times. The creek crossings were interesting as well - dry boots were in short supply/. Still, we were able exit the Basin and find the trail, with minimal time lost.
The west face of Red is loose as ever. Our group started up a snow slope about 50 yards to the left the "trail". Once this was known, we angled back to where the trail passed. Next stop - the summit!
We summited around 8:15 PM. Major activities on the summit (apart from snapping pics and taking in the splendid views) included placing the NW Hikers Traveling Summit Register, and consuming two layers of Yet's famous brownies. If there are brownies in my pack, I know my caloric needs will be met.
We carefully descended from Red, and thankfully no one was trundled. On the way out, the decision was made to take the PCT back to the parking lot, and thus avoid potential creek-crossing condundrums. Our exit time was just after 11 PM.
great hike!
Some pics:
How long will the register last on Red? Hmmm....

We found a bypass route from the Commonwealth Basin trail to the Pct that avoided the switchbacks and the creek crossings, unfortunatly it will probably only go in the snow. A few more pix.

My dad and I had a good time
It was nice to see Tokul again, although I don't think she was as happy to see me

Cha! Tokul loves the attention, she just plays hard to get. She was grateful for a long car ride and lounging by the Methow River for the weekend, though.

I'm just surprised that nobody went up there and grabbed it over the weekend. I felt sure it wouldn't last until Sunday.

Nice Mark! My favorite Snoqualmie Pass hike, and looks like a perfect day for it. And where I first encountered TNAB! Any sign of my winged nemesis?

Adding a few more pics which don't quite cut it in terms of describing the good time we all had.

Looks like a great time everyone. Looks like the approach was a little more challenging than last year.
We've missed you guys too much so were looking forward to joining TNAB for Bryant this Thursday (the day after Tisha's birthday - spanking machine time!!!)

I have to say that it has seemed a little strange without you two at the TNABs but it looks like you had a great time on your latest trip.
Spanking machine?! Sounds like a youtube video in the works...

Hey, Jasper - once I figured out what you were doing, it was fun to watch you herding Tokul back and forth. Don't want anyone getting too far from the pack...

Missed Red this year, one of my favorites from last year. And it seems I missed this TR, too? How'd that happen?
Anyway, I found this excellent photo of runningbird in Magnum's flickr library!
