My dad and I got together for a trip to climb some peaks in the Chinook Pass area. Couldn't have asked for better weather. Saturday we bushwhacked up Dewey Creek and headed for Dewey Peak. We surprised some elk amongst the slide alder; they must have been less than 50' away.

We followed the ridge on up toward the summit, which was an exposed and very loose 75' scramble.

From the summit we could hear elk bugling down below and in a large meadow there were half a dozen of them chasing each other around in circles and splashing through the water. Then they took off for a small lake and went for a swim.

We carefully made our way down (should have had a rope) and we headed over and up Seymour Peak as well. We got there just as the sun was ducking behind Rainier, then we made our way back down to camp near the lakes.

Sunday morning we got up and checked out the lakes, then headed up Tahtlum Pk for a fine view of Rainier and the surrounding area. There were quite a few dayhikers on the PCT visiting Dewey Lake.

We went back down to the lake and had a nice chilly swim, then we hiked out. Very fun trip in an area I don't get to very often. ~8.5 miles

Nice pic of Rainier! The red dirt below 10K, sorta shiny white above 10K look is really pronounced ... and the Fryingpan Gl is showing more "skin" there than I think I have ever seen in a picture other than the one in Brown Fred.
