RIP to a true musical innovator.
Here's a fun studio outtake of Mitch and Jimi trading leads:
...kind of eerie that he passed away so close to Jimi's final resting place.
On September 6, 1968, when Jimi Hendrix took the stage at the Seattle Center Coliseum, the crowd rushed the "revolving center stage". The Seattle Police Department, after a vain attempt to get the crowd out of the aisles and back into their seats, instructed the management to turn the house lights up and cut power to the stage.
Mitchell immediately flew into a solo that continued for some time while negotiations were made to get the power turned back on to the stage. When Hendrix's microphone was powered back up, he had some not-so-kind words for the management.
They finally managed to get most of the crowd back into their seats, but it took them quite awhile: they were unable to talk on the PA system over the top of Mitchell's solo.
play on, drummer

I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each."
