Klone Peak 6820' Fall 2008
Steve, Kyled, and I made it to the Klone Peak TH after stopping (multiple times) to move fallen trees, and quite a few rocks and boulders along Tommy Creek Rd. It was like running a gauntlet. We were on the trail shortly after 0800, and surprised with all the recent rain to find 3-5” of wet snow covering the area from the start eek.gif . Our goal had been to do both Klone and Kelly Peaks, but it didn’t take me long with early postholing into “Cascade Concrete” , up to 2’ that given the conditions, we would need to scale back our ambitious journey, in fact the thought had entered my mind that maybe a highpoint would do, since I had been to Klone several years earlier with Steve hmmm.gif , but we were there to bag a peak, and we were damn well going to do it, the views from the old lookout on Klone are spectacular, and to see the surrounding mountains adorned in early snow, worth the effort. I think stuck.gif .

It’s seven miles to the base of Klone Peak from the TH, and it was relentless postholing in wet snow, but the skies were a clear blue, and it was warmer than NOAA’s forecast of 40 degrees at 6800’, after a little more than five hours we made it to Klone’s summit hink.gif . Bomber!

Pictures and lunch went fast, and we left all to quickly. We headed back and our previously broken trail helped a lot, along with cutting the all to plentiful switchbacks where we could. I was whipped gag.gif , this wasn’t the first winter trip I had envisioned, but it’s kind of what happens every year, damn it was hard, eventually we made our way down to less snow, and surprisingly some areas that were covered with snow had melted away during the day. We walked a short while in the dark, our way illuminated by the surrounding snow. And yet another great trip guys up.gif up.gif , thanks for sharing it with me, it looks like we will be doing a little more cramponing this fall / winter vs. last year. hockeygrin.gif

Another great trip. The weather was excellent, but there was a little more snow than we were expecting. Here are some more photos:

I was thinking there would be some snow on the high end of the trip, but I think the mountains recieved quite a bit with the last storm. The wet snow will be nice, especially if we get more. Snowshoes down.gif , crampons or kicking in steps up.gif .

Nice pics kyle, especially the black and whites that you usually include. I'm going to have to start doing some black and whites for that Ansel Adams feel.

Thanks wildernessed and Jennifer S. To me it seems the black and whites add a little more texture to the snow.

kyled, love your transfer to B&W photos...classic and very successful. I checked out info on your camera, as well as "wildernessed" camera...both show great promise for an aspiring photo nut! My point and shoot is great but I love the capabilities yof our (both of yours') cameras. The selected scenes are outstanding and truly make me (and any back country enthusiast) get all excited (foam at the mouth? Well...not yet!) to visit the site. For readers, do check out the referred trip to Klone of June 2007. Meantime, I will plan on a visit in 2009, and pray that no bad angels revisit my health.... Great job on this trip and report...and fabulous photos! BTW, many years ago (decades, even) I backpacked much of the country seen in the set of photos...and I really do not recall all the magnificence these photos display. However, don't put off the place and the many routes and trails....all are most rewarding.
