Teneriffe TurkeyBurner 11/28/08
Day after Thanksgiving...go shopping or go hiking? TNAB'ers go hiking! And no better way to burn turkey than with a jaunt up Mt Teneriffe.
The crew: Steve (Yukon222), BarbE, Troy (mntsun), Chris (Magnum), Rich (meandmyaussies), Don (Mr Constant), Bob, John (Moosefish), Joseph (GQtreestalker), and Yets Truly
We got started around 10 AM. Conditions were wet to start and stayed that way. Quite breezy on top, where we met the Umbrella Lady. Good day for a bumbershoot. Not the best day for pics, but I did manage to snag this one of the Mt Si glacier during a brief sunbreak:
Mt Si Glacier, SE Aspect
Not the best day for yellow labs, either. Neither Tokul nor Chris' borrowed canine companion seemed to appreciate the trail. The Aussies were fine, however.
We summited after noon, and exited sometime after 2 PM. Most of us then made a beeline for the NBB&G for sustenance, our dripping clothes leaving puddles on the furniture. We left a good tip, right?
Good times!

We were going to make an attempt on the Si glacier but we lacked the necessary permits and the clouds moved in, bummer

The Si glacier appears to bear a striking resemblance to the Mary Green Glacier, in which case it's a good thing you didn't attempt it!

Congrats on frying the thighs.
Any snow above Kamikazie?
BTW, I think this one is as steep as Mailbox with the new switchbacks adding about a 1/4 mile to Mailbox.

Good wet fun! I could not figure out why the trail seemed steeper - was it the rain or the trail washing out and loosening rocks - ah, it was because this was the first time I had descended the upper half on "dirt".
We left a great tip.
Pictures not so good today - it took a little more effort than usual to get up and down.

Yes, it was good, wet fun - emphasis being on wet... Thanks, Mark, for organizing although next year maybe we can do Cedar Butte or something. It's still close to the NBB&G...
In this weather, I just took one shot of John in the lower trail looking amazingly dry.

Not sure about everyone else but me and my aussies slept amazingly well last night.

Yep-The Teneriffe Turkey & Thigh burner" was a wet one.
The camera never left the pack.
Amazingly-the only dry looking person on top was the umbrella lady.
Fun drying out at NBB&G.

Tokul is still ginger around the house even a few days later. She took a nasty slip on a rock at about 4,000 feet and then just seemed to panic. It seemed the wisest course of action to just chill out. Since wind was whipping us we spent a few minutes where we were (I wrapped her in my fleece) and then moved down the trail a few hundred feet where she got back into my fleece and ate my sandwich.
She was back to normal and I very briefly considered going up again, but decided getting her down without problems was way more important. (Sounds like the rocks above 4,000 feet would have been a deal breaker anyway.)

Aw, poor Tokul. Rufus and I send her hugs, kisses, and licks. Well maybe the licks are only from Rufus.
I hope she feels ok soon.

Yeah, Tokul's ok. She's watching my son eat crackers right now and hasn't had any issue catching the crumbs before they hit the floor. She's still a little more skittish than normal on slick surfaces, but I think that will fade with time.
Thanks for your concern.

Even after we told Z&A that Tokul slipped and hurt herself they were still mad at us for taking an extra day of rest to recover from the Plague. Glad to hear she's recovering and that everyone else made it up safely. You guys are true TNAB: Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these hikers from the swift completion of their appointed peak. Well done ~Jo & Scott

before slip after slip almost down
She's doing fine now. She even ventured out on the kitchen floor to try to snag a chocolate chip cookie. I bet next time she pretends to slip to see if she gets my sandwich again.

Glad to hear Tokul is doing better! But better give her a few extra bonus sandwiches over the next couple of days. Just to make sure.
It was a slick mess up on the rocks. Combination of moss slime, ice, water and snow. Didn't bother taking the digital SLR due to the weather so just a few shots here from the small point-n-shoot. Still a fun time though!
