HJT, just out of curiosity how many of those Fat Smitty Burgers have you eaten in your lifetime? Did you get the fries also?

... regarding Fat Smitty's ... we used to stop there for apres' hike chow all the time. We stopped there regularly, for the better part of 15 years. That ended after my son stopped there after a dayhike ... and sat in a seat with a view into the kitchen ... and just happened to see the cook hack up a lugie and deposit it into a burger that was subsequently served.....
Gross and disguuuusting.
My son and his two friends (one of which also saw the hacking) stood up and walked out, and no one I know has been back in the joint since hearing about this little incident.
Prior to this event - which took place about 6 years ago - we had enjoyed and raved about Smitty burgers for years to all our friends and aquaintences. There is no reason that my son would even think up, let alone make up this story.

Man, I went to this one place on 542 after a 5-day trip, in Glacier -- or maybe it was the next town after that? -- and it was one of the best burgers I've ever had. But I forget the name. I went there based on the recommendation of a local I met on the trail. He told me specifically NOT to go to another place near there. Anyone?
Oh, and has anyone mentioned Omega pizza in Granite Falls? Very yummy.

Was it Grahams? The old general store / post office turned restaurant. We went there after Yellow Aster Butte and it was great. A very eclectic menu - burgers, fish tacos, thai curry - and it was very tasty. I liked the feel of the place too. It still uses the original wood burning stove and there's an iron frying pan rigged as a counter-weight to keep the front door closed. The place has a nice sense of humor too.

That's why I like Logger's Landing in Quilcene.
Once, a freind and I were in the parking lot knocking off the larger chunks of mud from our work pants before entering the restaurant (we had just logged out the Duckabush) . It was raining like a bastard, and cold as hell. too. The waitress had seen us through the window, and actually came outside and herded us in, saying that we can finish de-mudding in the dining room, since everyone in there is always muddy anyway.
Once inside, the other patrons there were awesome. I called a man at another table a "gentleman," and he overheard it. He acted all indignant, and said, "hey! did you just call me a gentleman?" I replied, "Oh, I'm sorry." and turned to my freinds and continued the conversation, "...I mean, the saw blade was from here to that bastard over there at the next table."
The fellow patron was then happy and tipped his beer.

Exactly why I like that place, Quark. The lady working there last time...she was all old school waitress. Honey, Sweetheart and whatever else. That and the food was good trashy food (ie..full o' fat and calories. No hippy health food that I eat the other 6 days a week!)
Only thing it was missing is the free back rubs that the waiters at a couple Mexican joints on the Peninsula give for free if you are: young, female and look single

Thanks, Tom. I didn't find this thread when I did a search but I thought I had seen it before.
Hiway 2-
Dutch Cup in Sultan was recently rated best burger on Hiway 2 but they've gone out of business.
Alpine Drive-In in Sultan changed owners last year & I stopped and had a very disappointing meal at the beginning of summer. Won't try them again.
Also agree with Quark about Good Food in Marblemount - definitely off my list.

I have considered stopping, but memories told me to avoid those palces at Sultan, Granite Falls, etc. I might try one per the Dec. 14 list, this thread. I do recommend the fine coffee boost en route to your favorite hike on US 2. Muffins are from Costco and fresh (frozen or fresh). Nothing can beat the power of Mount Index and fine coffee.

I'll asign myself a trial visit at Baring Grocery! Anyway, it would be fun...it is across from another favorite peak and the less admired but rather fantastic south face of Baring Mountain.
Had a magnificent breakfast at Sunset Cafe at Cle Elum on a recent excursion to a project site; my employer's first visit to that establishment convinced him you get great value form your investment in home fries, eggs (all sorts of ways), etc. My mouth is now watering just to think of the warm and friendly place.
Don't recall name of another fine spot, though up the road at Roslyn. It has the featured "moose" of yesteryear's favorite NW sitcom...or was it dramadey? I sure miss the series and the actors. There are a few ferns in this establishment, but the food is hardy and not pricey; friendly, too! I must try The Brick. Ow....! The loss to fire of the great pizza place at Roslyn still hampers my thoughts of driving all the way to Cooper Lake or Salmon la Sac; that was a sad day when hikers and outdoors folks lost their favorite pizza and communal retreat following long miles on trails, etc.
BTW, anyone try the ultra-pricey Suncadia Lodge (Cle Elum-Roslyn) for a meal? It is far out of my league.

Forgot to add that the "old" Sasquatch that greeted customers at Chalet on Hy 2 moved to new spot down slope (east of parking); when you "walk your dog" there, you'll find the more Gentle Giant carefully established, master of his new territory. The "old guy" developed dry rot and some other problems. Can't have Old Sasquatches falling and squashing customers!

If you just burned a couple thousand calories do'n the Enchantment loop and are headed home East, Country Boy's BBQ in Cashmere is a good bet. Ribs and a brick of ribbon fries are at least a heart attack in a basket but hey, Aasgard Pass probably just removed some of the placque out of your arteries.
