This was a TNAB hike. If you ever tire of Mt. Si or any of the other tried and true I-90 corridor hikes, give Mt. Washington a try. It won't let you down. I thought the snow was steep after the trail. The snow was soft enough for good steps, but almost too soft for plunge stepping down. I didn't have snowshoes, but could have used them along some of the trail. I hate punching through.

Soft snow began below the stream crossing and continued to the summit. Sun gleaming around Mt. Washington's North ridge made for a colorful view of the I-90 corridor illuminating Si, Tenerife and Mailbox in a pink hue.
Big, happy crew on the summit. Some took braided routes on the way up as the steps got pushed deeper into the snow. Dogs were doing their best to ascend with just noses snorkeling above the white.
A glissade down left some of us with soggy, cold pants and others with a few scrapes (I hear).

A few more random pix.
Snow started before Owl View. Put snowshoes on at first creek crossing but they were more of a hindrance than help. New regular summer trail would be a major pain and Great Wall downright dangerous. It was nice to turn off headlamps on way down when we hit Iron Horse beautiful night

Kind of a strange hard but mushy snow. It seemed to set up really quickly after the trail was punched thru so it was almost like hiking down hard concrete steps in places. The glissades were bumpy but preferable to the down steps.

Beautiful Rainier shot! Makes me wish I'd continued to at least the second landing above the shortcut, instead of making a premature evacuation after reaching the first. But I was sweaty and the wind was cold and I really didn't want anyone to have to carry me off the mountain.
Knowing I wouldn't make the top, I beat a retreat to the Owl Hike Spot to snap some sunset views. There I added dry clothes and fuel, and then enjoyed a leisurely return to the parking lot, after first side tripping the JWT for a half mile or so with my moon shadow in beautiful solitude.

Hope to see everyone again next week!

I'm changing Zeusdaddy's trail name to 'he of few pictures'. Can't wait to rejoin TNAB for these grand adventures & spectacular sunsets. Until then I may try attaching a helmet cam to Zeus' collar...

This TNAB route was way more interesting than the other ones I've taken to get to Mt. Washington.
Coming down was even better- Love those glissades!
Fun evening with great company.

This was a great hike. The snow kept you nice and cool while you were sweating your butt off heading up. I just wish TNAB '09 wasn't so darn fast!

Wow! You guys took some great shots. I had a great time. Thank you! Does this absolve me of the responsibility of guest-writing an official trail report?
I should have realized that there is no such thing as a switchback to a TNABer, and the precarious pitch of our ascent above the basin made it a challenge even for our four-legged friends. Teneriffe is enough to suck the life out anyone, and finishing off the day with the TNABers on Mt Washington made it an exercise in survival.

Am I to understand that you did Teneriffe earlier in the day?
