On a recent trip to Shi Shi Beach, I observed this inscribed into a tree, "USPI 1897". Anyone have any idea what this is from? I know the USGS was around before that so it couldn't be any USGS precursor. Thanks for any information!

I looked everywhere and the best I could find was USIP (United States Institute of Peace) but no USPI

That was the year the park pre-cursor was set up, Olympic national forest reserve or something like that...
Does the inscription look over 100 yrs old?

It looked pretty old. I had no idea an inscription would last that long on a living tree.
If anyone is going there, its on the sea-side of the big tree in the camping area as you first come down to the beach from the Makah trail. Its the one with the big horizontal branch. Sorry, no pictures.

I'd venture to say that would be "U.S. Postal Inspector." Maybe on a mail run to an outpost or a claim... or just on a hike.
Pretty cool inscription!
