I think TT was using the principles of msacraS in his proof.

He needs to be using the principles of common sense.

Well, well Mr. Tom_Sjolseth...I suggest that Balancing Rock is some 10 feet higher than the closest peak (insert white glove slap.)
You might want to use your white glove to carefully remove your foot from your mouth and wipe it off. Did you happen to notice that the balanced rock is also on a ridge in the foreground and the summit is in the background? What happens to objects that are further away when you try and compare them to objects that are closer? Any idea? They look bigger. Don't beleive me? Here's a pic I took of Everest and Nuptse. I think that we can arrive at which one is taller with some level of certainty. wink.gif

PS .. I'm not even convinced I see the currently accepted true summit of Sherpa Peak in Yukon's photo.

I am pretty sure these are the same scientific principles that got Pluto kicked out of the Planet Club. frown.gif

Your suggestions don't mean squat given your questionable analytic methodology. Having actually climbed Sherpa Peak, I can tell you without a doubt that the Balanced Rock is not 10' taller. I don't think anyone who has actually been up there would disagree with that. Since the difference in elevation between the points is so miniscule, the question of which point is higher can only be answered by scientific methods, not by line drawings on photographs and juxtaposition of shadows. Just to be clear, I'm not saying the Balanced Rock isn't the taller of the two points. I don't know, and I'm not going to pretend like I know. It could go either way based upon my experience. But I'm not going to sit here and pretend that the shadows are telling me things that nobody else knows for sure. So go ahead and put your foot back in your mouth and carry on. cool.gif
Well I'll have to pull it out to keep out there...Can you share a pic of the summit?

...wait...are we just going to hang here or go hiking?

+1 to this. As I stated above, during my brief (it's damned exposed up there) visit to Sherpa summit, I noted that the balanced rock looked about the same height. My buddy Ted made a similar comment. No frickin' way it's 10 feet taller.

Based on what I remember, I share your question. I think the summit might be behind the ostensible high point in that pic. Oh, in case somebody missed it: It doesn't matter. biggrin.gif

True story: Back in 1979, I was hitchhiking across South Dakota. A guy picks me up and the following conversation occurred. The guy was serious. I'm not kidding. This really happened. The Guy: So, Steve, have you ever seen Mount Rushmore? Me: Yes. Have you? The Guy: Nope, but I plan to see it on this trip. Mount Rushmore is proof that there's a god. Me: Oh? How's that? The Guy: Well, it's a natural rock formation that looks just like four Presidents of the United States.

Don't worry Tom, I think all us engineers out here cringed when we saw TT's photo analysis!

Here's a proposition: Let's settle this next summer, with two groups of people (one to be on the "main" summit, and another to be on the "balanced rock" summit). We'll compare heights then. Heck, let's bring a super-long chain of twine/rope and a level, just for kicks! clown.gif

60 pounds lighter but not 60 points brighter.

or maybe you could drop a canon ball from the top of each and see which takes longer to hit the ground. up.gif up.gif

I like shooting a leveled rifle from the regular summit toward the balanced rock. If it passes over without impact the regular summit is higher. If there is an impact you can measure and compare the distance to determine the height. I think I saw this on mythbusters. hockeygrin.gif
