Partly sunny predicted for MRNP on Sunday (although they also predict showers?) so I'll guess I'll head down there. I'll probably go in 410, maybe do Goat Falls if the conditions are right, drive over Cayuse Pass, maybe check out Silver Falls and the East Side Trail, maybe Grove of the Patriarchs, then on to White Pass if I have time. I really wish they'd open the Stevens Canyon Road already. That's my favorite part of the park.

Ooooh. What's the east side trail looking like currently? I've been wanting to get back down to there for a while.

Went up into the Verlot to beyond Silverton area...roads off main Hwy better, but you still can't drive to higher up trailheads such as Boardman Lake, Bear Lake, etc. Took shots of waterfalls and then Big Four Mtn. and Marble Pass area.

Hey Tom,
If Persis isn't enough, try the traverse from Persis to Index. Wow, I haven't been this trashed in a long time! It's a long trip over there and one guys' altimeter reported 7500' total gain for the day. I always find the totals they have a bit hard to believe, except my legs feel like Gumby right now. Somehow, the weather held out today. Sorry, off topic (we did the trip on Sunday, not Saturday)!

If you want to avoid snow like I do, you'll have to wait a while yet. I assume you're after the waterfalls? The Silver Falls area looks clear of snow, but I've shot that one to death so I didn't stop. The falls where the Ohanapechosh River and Chinook River meet may be clear, but Stafford Falls and everything north is under heavy snow.
I wonder if it would be possible to hike from the road to Stafford Falls. It's flat and short, but you would have to ford the Ohanapecosh to get to the bowl, and I don't remember that river being easy to cross. It's right across from the Shriver (?) Peak Trailhead, so finding the spot on the road would be easy. Not that the hike down from Deer Creek is hard. Just curious.

I don't think you'd want to even consider fording Chinook Creek this time of year, since it's bigger than some rivers in the state. In the late summer, I imagine it may be possible. But why not just climb down to the creek at the footbridge across the cascades upstream. Stafford is only 1/2 mile further down. Plus, Stafford can be a pain to photograph in high water (as seen here - http://www.waterfallsnorthwest.com/falls/stafford.htm ). It's much more photogenic in the late summer / fall.
I guess whenever I got down there to camp as I usually do in July, the creeks will be pretty full then <evil grin>.

Like I said, I was just curious. If I remember correctly, I have some decent photos of Stafford Falls in my evergrowing heap of unsorted photos. It was a cloudy day in early June and the flow was light enough to make a decept photo. The green moss in the bowl was really glowing. Nice little hike. I went from Deer Creek Falls down to Stafford and on down the to Ohanapecosh River, then retraced back up to Deer Creek, farther up the Eastside Trail to Dewey Falls, then back down to Deer Creek and up part of the Owyhigh Lakes Trail to catch the falls there. I think it was 9 falls in 8 miles.
Here's there trip report I did for it at the WTA.

oooh. Your poor man, you missed the best one (Sydney Falls on Kotsuck Creek). Maybe we ought to get together and do the whole thing again this summer. I need new (well, better at least) pics of all of 'em...

Hey Sore Feet,
Have you been up Silver and Troublesome Creeks? Silver has a number of excellent waterfalls in the first 2-3 miles. Troublesome Creek has a superb gushing creek through rock. Not a falls but spectacular! Silver was snowfree for a couple miles today, and Troublesome is clear to the very short distance to the rushing creek.
