Didydip, thanks for the pics- very cool! I hadn't heard of any of the mines you mentioned except Bonanza Queen, are those others in eastern WA? I have yet to go up Deer Creek Rd. I have been in Black Chief and Nemo which are nearby, but they are just short and straight tunnels. Still cool though, they are fairly easy to get to (Black Chief is right next to Mtn Loop). Are there any others in the Silverton-Monte Cristo area that anyone here has found that are safe to enter and aren't on private property? Frankm3- that’s a great picture and Mineral City sounds cool, I’ll have to go up there sometime. Thanks for the info everyone! up.gif

The guy who wrote these stories is my Dad. I grew up there at the Lodge. Couldn't have asked for a better way to live.

Lucky you! That must have been great. Which stories did your father write? (There's a couple different books referred to in this thread, and I wasn't sure which one.)

No snow at Monte Cristo. We'll be going in this Sunday (the 25th,) to look for three old mines not well known to many folks. The mines are: the Snowbird and the Tobique and Lalla Rookh. We'll be meeting at the gate at 9:00 AM. Anyone without a gate key can hop a ride with me or one of the others that have keys. Jake

Maybe someone can answer a question for me. I grew up in Everett, and I have this memory of driving up to Monte Cristo with my dad, to get pie smile.gif. This would have been in the 50's, early 60's. I tried to search on-line to see if someplace up there served pie back then, but couldn't find any info. Does anyone know about the pie?

I did a search for "pie" and "monte crisco", but all I could find is this unusual sandwish recipe. I remember going up there in the early 70's when the buildings were still there and the turntable. Then we had a picnic at a campground with huge trees. Where, I do not know. Speaking of pies, where I work someone is picked to bring in doughnuts once a week. Doughtnuts are ok. Some are better than otheres. Last week, though, the designated doughnut person brought in an apple pie made by his wife, and ice cream to boot. It was scrrrrumptious! burger.gif drink.gif

There was a lodge/cabins up there until the late 70's early 80's maybe. The lodge building burned down. Don't know about the pies- not that they burned with the lodge- but whether they were served or not. smile.gif . If you are ever near Everett stop in at the public library and check out the excellent Northwest Room upstairs with two regional history specialists to help with research about NW history- particularily Snoh Co./Everett/Monte Cristo stuff. I know they can help you with Monte Cristo lore, it's got to be one of the most popular subjects people inquire about there. They have original copies of newspaper articles, photos, etc. about Monte - some I distinctly remember about folks running the lodge/resort, and either the same people or others wintering over up there too in the 60s/70s period I believe. Also check with the Monte Cristo Preservation Association , I bet they could help you too. Since mgd went off on a tangent about pies and doughnuts and Monte Cristo sandwiches- the most memorable MC sandwich I had was at the Blue Bayou restaurant at Disneyland- you know, the one you float by on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Great atmosphere and tasty sandwich. Had to be 25 years ago! eek.gif

I have never had a Monte Cristo Sandwich. Didn't know they existed until today. The jam part sounds strange. When I went to D-Land, along time ago, we ate at some restaurant near the Haunted Mansion. Can't rememember what I had. The Pirates ride was the best though. They need something like that up here.

In the 50's the lodge was run by the Wilkies. Rosemary and I believe her husbands name was Del. Rosemary wrote the book, 'Broad Bold Ledge of Gold' about Monte Cristo history.

i have been up silver creek. passed the old bus and the cabin. seen the mines. saw where the words "MIneral City" were carved in a log. went passed that about a mile and turned around. wondering if their are any structures or old cabins in this area. also wondering about any other secluded cabins in snohomish county.

A lot of cabins in the Pierce County hills and forest. A lot of old coal mines too. The Department of Natural Resources, Geology and Earth Resources library in Olympia can tell you how to look it up down there. Be Damn sure it's not a coal mine you want to find. gold. silver, lead mines are a mild risk to enter usually. Coal mines are down right a sure death wish.
