I was invited by a younger group to try for Hidden Lake Peak. I discovered the big advantage to this - someone with a lot of energy to kick steps. We got a leisurely start at about 9:30 up the winter route. The beginning was relatively easy but at about 4300 ft the ground was covered with a thin layer of hard ice requiring crampons/microspikes. At about 4600 feet we started to hit snow, which got deep and soft very quickly. Someone had been up there recently so it wasn't too strenuous to get up without snowshoes in their tracks. When we broke out of the trees, the snow was fairly firm - a crust on top of about 6 inches of powder on top of firm snow. We hit the summit a little after 2 & spotted a few people that had braved the cornice and gotten to the lookout. Back down to the car around 6.

I love, love, love that last pano. Looks like the views were amazing. Can't believe you got to 4600' before the snow kicked in. Great trip.

trip info
Could you give me any info on where the winter route begins? I do not have a gps, so just general landmarks, or is it better to just drive to the trailhead?

Looks like a fun trip. I have never backpacked in the winter/snow before, looks interesting. Thanks for sharing the trip.

Here's a track up the winter route. You start at 2800 feet on the road & start up heavy timber on a prominent ridge. It's all cross-country without any obvious trail so don't try it if you're not confident of your navigation skills.
View larger size in new window The road is open to the summer trailhead & people were coming up that way but from what we could see there were a lot of avy debris crossings & there's a pretty prominent cornice above on the N. Ridge of Hidden Lake Peaks to be cautious of.
