Well, its not an incredible alpine experience and offers nothing in the way of views or challenge. But for my 74 year old mom (and dad at 74, too), it offered a great family outing close to town. When I called my mom and asked her what she wanted to do she said with absolutely no hesitation "let's go for a hike." "Spencer Island?" Done deal. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, not many people, and lots of birds as this place is a known birding hotspot. There are no longer any loop trails because the dikes are simply collapsing and eroding away because they are old and were constructed of wood debris many, many years ago. There's a footbridge that collapsed at the south end at Steamboat Slough. So you must be content with out and back now. My wife packed a picnic lunch that we enjoyed at the Langus Riverfront Park. The raining tent caterpillars made for some great laughs.
