sarbar:
We were two people headed back from mosquito lake as your bunch was having lunch at the BIG log by the lake. The Ol' Goat may have been wearing a blue rain cap.
I am in big trouble with my partner for missing out on the "fudge opportunity"!

Your hiking habits are far more classy than mine!

Packwood Lake questions:
I was thinking that it would be a good overnight destination for this weekend if I can wrest the fishing pole from my bf's hands but after reading a bunch of back reports I am confused. I am reading about lots of garbage, beat up campsites and motorcycle use on a parallel trail. But, the FS site says the trail is in wilderness the whole way. SO:
Can motorized vehicles drive to the lake? Will we hear them as we are hiking? If so, what are our best bets for finding quiet?
I see there is a campground at the near end of the lake. Are the campsites further up the trail better?
Thanks!

It's a good thing-the trail is mostly in the Wilderness-and you won't most likely hear any bikes. They have use of the service road to the dam at the lake. They have to park at the end of the road. The trashy campsites were the ones right next to the road.
Tell him to bring his fishin' pole!
Once you get to the lake, keep walking around the lake, there are campsites all along the way, right above the water-and as usual the farther you go, the less people you see Once you reenter the Wilderness, it is much nicer and cleaner. There are campsites all the way to the end of the lake, at the inlet stream.

Cool, thanks. Yeah, he should bring his pole and catch our dinner!

Motorcycles and quad runners can and often do come right up to the lake on the service road-The best place to camp IMO is up at the far end of the lake where Lake Creek comes into the lake-fewer people/less trash and if weather's nice on Memorial Day weeked, there will be a lot of people at the lower end.
Make sure your BF knows of the selective fishery rules-single barbless hook, no bait, and fish must be over 10 inches.
