If enacted, the bill would create an "America the Beautiful Pass," which would be required for access to lands administered by any of the five agencies. It is expected to cost at least $85 annually. In addition, the proposal would abolish the Golden Age Pass, which has traditionally been available as a lifetime pass to seniors for one-time cost of $10. Seniors would have to purchase an "America the Beautiful Pass" annually.

Next week, the House of Representatives begins hearings on HR 3283, the House's version of the Fee Demo bill. Led by Rep. Ralph Regula (R-Ohio), without a single national forest in his district, the House Committee on Resources wants to make recreation fees permanent. Indeed, they even want to increase their scope by repealing the "golden" series of senior passes and mandating that the taxpaying public buy a national pass for up to $100 a year for entry onto our public lands.
